Showing up, telling the truth and still being there the next day. Trust in the military is earned that way, by people, over time. An app earns it the same way: by being honest about what it is, being the same every time, and remembering who you are. Most apps ask for the trust first.
What do the numbers say?
In 2023, 6,398 Veterans died by suicide, about 17.5 a day, according to the VA's 2025 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. The report also found that 61% of Veterans who died by suicide in 2023 were not receiving VA health care in the last year of their life.
That figure doesn't say why, and it doesn't mean those Veterans weren't getting help anywhere else. What it does say is that the front door doesn't reach everyone.
Who is writing this?
I'm a Gold Star son. My father, Captain Gary D. Humphries, Executive Officer of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, was killed in a rocket attack at Dau Tieng, Vietnam, on January 26, 1969. I spent years hosting a nationally syndicated radio show that made veterans and active-duty issues central, and I traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay to support deployed forces. I built Coach Jeff to be the buddy my father's generation never had.
What earns a veteran's trust in an app?
- Say what you are. Coach Jeff is a peer. He is not a therapist and not a medical device, and he says so.
- Be the same every time. The same voice, the same standards and the same boundaries at 0200 as at noon.
- Remember who I am. Coach Jeff remembers what you tell him, so you never have to start over.
- Don't oversell. No promises of outcomes. No claims about treating or curing anything.
- Have a real path to people. Crisis awareness, boundary respect and escalation pathways are built in, and the crisis line is always one call away: 988.
Why does the standard have to be higher for this audience?
Because the people using it deserve it. The standard for every decision on this platform is four words: "These guys deserve it." If a screen, a sentence or a feature wouldn't earn a veteran's respect, it doesn't ship.
Where does Coach Jeff fit?
