AI can be a patient, always-available presence for a veteran: a voice that listens at 0200, remembers what you said last week, and never burns out. It cannot diagnose PTSD, treat it, or replace a clinician, and it must never be the last line of defense in a crisis. Coach Jeff is built as a peer, not a therapist and not a medical device.
What is PTSD?
The VA's National Center for PTSD describes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a mental health problem. Its symptoms fall into four groups: reliving the event, avoiding things that remind you of it, having more negative thoughts and feelings than before, and feeling on edge or keyed up. Anyone can develop PTSD at any age. For Veterans, the Center lists deployment, training accidents and military sexual trauma among the experiences that may lead to it.
How common is PTSD among veterans?
The National Center for PTSD estimates that in a given year, about 15 out of 100 Veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD, about 14 out of 100 Persian Gulf War Veterans, and about 5 out of 100 Vietnam War Veterans.
Are there effective treatments?
Yes. The National Center for PTSD says there are several helpful treatments, including talk therapies and medications. Treatment happens with a clinician. Nothing an app does replaces it, and Coach Jeff does not try to. A good place to start is the VA's National Center for PTSD at ptsd.va.gov.
What can AI reasonably offer a veteran?
The hard hours don't keep a schedule. Plenty of people are awake at 0200 with a head that won't quiet down and nobody they want to wake up. A well-built AI peer can offer three things a calendar full of appointments can't.
It is there. A voice on the other end at any hour. Coach Jeff is available 24/7 by text and by voice, and he doesn't clock out.
It is patient. He never burns out.
It remembers. Coach Jeff remembers what you tell him, so every conversation picks up where the last one left off. Anyone who has had to tell the same hard story to a new person knows what that costs.
What can't AI do?
It can't diagnose. It can't prescribe. It can't examine you, take responsibility for your care, or stand in for the people in your life. And it can't promise outcomes. Be wary of any AI product that claims to treat or cure a medical condition.
Regulators are working out where the line sits. On November 6, 2025, the FDA's Digital Health Advisory Committee met to discuss generative artificial intelligence-enabled digital mental health medical devices. Coach Jeff is not a medical device. He is a peer, and nothing on this page is medical advice.
What happens in a crisis?
Crisis awareness, boundary respect and escalation pathways are built into Coach Jeff's structure. They are not a feature toggle. But no app is a crisis line. If you are in crisis, call 988 — Veterans Crisis Line. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
Who is Coach Jeff for?
Coach Jeff is a voice-first peer for veterans and service members, including those living with PTSD. He is approved by Apple and coming soon to the App Store, with a full launch on Veterans Day, November 11, 2026.
